I’m a 19 year old girl, living in Northern Michigan. The family on my moms side have always been avid believers of the paranormal and I have grown up the same way.
Over the course of time we have had some strange things happen to us. The most happened to me at our old farmhouse.
A little bit of background is required for this story. The house we lived in sat on a hill with a large driveway that curved up to the back of the house. Essentially our back door was our front door.
Our “porch” was a five foot by four foot area of fenced in cement with a wicker chair in one corner that my mom sat in to smoke. It had a little sidewalk that connected to the cement area that connected to the garage.
Our garage sat about 25 feet from the house and another fifty feet from that on the other side of the driveway was a big barn. We had swamps on either side of the yard, a large field in the back, and woods in front of us. Ultimately we were quite secluded and dealt with lots of wildlife from turtles to coyotes in our backyard.
I was around eight when my mom and I moved in and was pretty excited to have a huge yard. As someone who spent a lot of time in the country with my grandparents I was outside a lot and it never worried me.
Being outside at that house though? Something about it never sat right with me. I would always find myself looking over my shoulder. I never stayed outside after the sun started to go down, not alone anyways.
It was always so dark there at night. Even on nights the moon was full, it seemed too dark. You couldn’t see anything beyond the porch light. Not even our dogs would go past the lighted area at night.
Now, I’m a complete chicken when it comes to the dark. I hate going outside alone at night. I can’t sleep with it pitch black either.
I was about 12 when this happened. I had gotten an iPhone 4 and was pretty stoked, so I was on it quite a bit. Needless to say I had to charge it often. Coming back from the store that night I’d forgotten my charger in my moms car and my stomach dropped when I realized I had to go get it or my phone would die.
On this night the moon was out so it wasn’t completely black. Plus I had the porch light but that didn’t reach far. Yet being the wuss I am I asked my mom to sit on the porch while I ran out to get it.
With a roll of her eyes she agreed and I flipped on my dinky phone light and made my way to the car. About four feet away from the car the light from my phone catches something. About 10 feet away I see eye shine. Like that of a deer or cats.
It didn’t move like a normal animal would. Any critters around our house would just take off if we got too close, but whatever this was just sat there and stared at me. We stared at each other for about two minutes and I swear it didn’t blink once.
I stand around 5’7 and whatever this was seemed to be sitting or maybe hunched down. I couldn’t tell from the dim phone light, but it’s eyes sat about level with my chest.
I slowly started backing up towards the porch and only when I was five feet away did I turn my back on it and rush back to my mom. She must’ve seen the look on my face because she asked me what was wrong.
“There was something staring at me in the driveway,” I told her in a hushed voice.
She frowned and we peaked around the fenced area on the porch, trying to see it with my phone light. I’m standing there moving the light to see if my phone will catch eye shine again.
All of the sudden I hear my mom rushing in the door leaving my butt out there…. thanks mom.
Once we were both in we got a flashlight and started shining it out the window where it was, but it was gone. It was absolutely silent when it came and left, whatever it was.
Fast forward to around 1 am that night. My room at the time was downstairs and my bed was right below a big window that faced the driveway. Cliché am I right?
Anyways, I slept with the window open because it was hotter than heck in the summer and I enjoyed listening to the peepers from the swamps.
As I was laying there listening to the sounds of nature, there was a sudden loud screech from across the road that had me staring out the window. It was so loud it sounded like it was next to me yet it echoed and sounded far away. It was a noise like I’d never heard. Almost like metal scraping on metal with a shrill woman’s scream mixed in. On top of that, whatever was making it was moving insanely fast. It was across the woods in seconds and the noise faded from ear shot. It wasn’t a bird or anything I’d ever heard.
In the morning I’d asked my mom if she’d heard it and she said no. I don’t know if the two were connected but I feel like they were.
I never saw that thing again, nor did I hear anything like that again. I can say that I’m glad. I couldn’t even begin to think of what it was. All the stories I’ve heard about creatures are mostly where people have actually seen it or they’ve been attacked or chased. Mine wasn’t that, just hints of something.
As much as I miss the country, I don’t mind living in the small town.
