My former best friend and I used to go on a lot of walks together back in 2017. We live four blocks away from each other and neither of us could drive at the time so it was one of the things we like to do and were able to do to get out of our houses. It was in summer and it was always especially nice out at night. Anyway, there’s a park in our town within walking distance which was one of our usual haunts. To get there you could either stay on the sidewalk or you could take a shortcut on this path along the river called the riverwalk, which we would take to enter and leave the park. This instance happened one night when we were leaving the park via this shortcut around 10pm. The moon was pretty bright so you could still see everything, even though there weren’t any lights. As we were walking we passed this one spot that has a small set of steps leading down to the river bank. The conversation had lulled and I looked directly at the steps. They were empty. I looked at her and made some comment on the weather being nice, or something along those lines. When I looked back at the trail I immediately noticed the stairs in the corner of my eye. They weren’t empty anymore. There was a man there, sitting on the top step, watching us walk past. Right away I felt cold, almost like swimming through a cold spot in a warm pool. I also only knew he was watching us from the way his head was facing right at us. I couldn’t tell from his face because it wasn’t there, even though I should have because of the moonlight. After all, I could see my friend’s face and she had her back to the moon. Instead of a face, there was only a black void. I kind of seized up, and I could only walk past robotically. That in of itself is kind of weird, because even at this time of night, at least where I live, you always acknowledge the people you walk past with a wave or a simple “hi.” But I couldn’t speak, not even to my friend. Now, I rarely get scared. Startled, sure, but almost never scared. What I felt that night was pure instinctual terror as I walked past this man. Normally I would have thought this was a hallucination, as I have been known to have them in the past, but a few minutes after I saw the man, my friend said she saw and felt the exact same things in the exact same way. For a long time we had no idea what that was but looking back on it now and after hearing other stories, I believe this to be a shadow person.
