What’s In The Kitchen?

By Diana Freeman

This happened when I was 16 years old. As most young girls in the 90’s I had a babysitting job for extra cash. One family in particular hired me regularly. They had three boys. At the time of this incident they were 3, 5, and 8 years old.

On this night everything was going normal, kids and I were playing in the living room and horsing around. The youngest boy had a habit of not finishing his dinner and would snack on it here and there for the rest of the night.

In the middle of playing he wandered into the kitchen to eat a bit when all of a sudden he screamed and came running back to me. I asked what was wrong and he said, “there’s a man in there” while pointing to the kitchen.

The other two boys didn’t believe him and took it as a joke.

Apparently this has happened before.

I knew I had to investigate so I took their pit bull with me to go have a peak. I left the boys on the couch and tried to look brave. I didn’t see anything in the kitchen or back room, nothing was out of place and all doors and windows were still locked.

I assured the boys there was no one there and got the little guy to calm down.

About an hour later he had forgotten about it and went back in to eat again. Once more he came running and screaming out of the kitchen.

This time he just kept saying, “rat rat rat rat”. Now THAT freaked me out! Turns out there was a rat living in the walls and when he reached up to get food off his plate (he was too short to see the top of the table) he grabbed the rat. We stayed in the living room the rest of the night until the parents got home.
Mr Rat, let’s not meet again.
