I’ll start by giving a little background before I recount the events of last summer. My older brother and I grew up in an old farm house that was built by and belonged to a family called the Ordways for over 200 years before we moved in. My mother always joked about us being the first “strangers” to inhabit the house. I never thought how true that statement really was until paranormal things began to happen.
It was the beginning of summer break and my older brother and his girlfriend were staying over the house every weekend. We needed a place to hang around so we put all our efforts into the large white barn which sat beside our house. It was unused except for the lower half which we had converted into a garage years ago. We decided that if we cleared space and decked it out it would be the perfect summer hangout, and it was. The barn was so large we only ended up using about half, so the other portion was dark and empty.
Every night was the same, we would head up the stairs into the barn, plop onto the couches and listen to music. The lighting up there was always pretty dim to begin with since all we had was old Christmas lights strung up and candles to illuminate the space. We would stay up there for hours, often late into the night just talking. Eventually we would go up some nights and it would be so cold that we would have to get a sweatshirt despite it being nearly 90 degrees outside. Eventually we began to hear something like footsteps and boots scuffing on the wood floor coming from the distant and pitch black portion of the barn. From then on it only escalated. It became a common occurrence for us to hear noises coming from the other end of the barn. My brother, his girlfriend, and I finally began to talk about the fact that this was not normal. We all agreed it felt like someone was watching us from the dark side of the barn. As the summer wore on we never stopped going into the barn and the noises became louder, more frequent, and almost closer to our side of the barn. However, we all enjoyed hanging out up there, so we never wanted to let whatever was happening scare us off.
Until one night, near the end of the summer, something happened that I will never forget. As we were all sitting up there chatting and jamming out my brother suddenly turned off the music. He claimed he had heard a voice coming from the other end of the barn and wanted to listen for it again. A few minutes of silence and he turned the music back on but kept it low. We all resumed chatting until I began to feel immensely uneasy. We heard a few bangs from the other end of the barn which spooked us, but we tried to ignore it. Then another noise, a loud thump came from the bottom of the stairs leading up to the barn. We all stopped and stared at each other, fear gripping our chests as we had never heard a sound so close before.
I, unfortunately, was sitting alone on the couch nearest to the stairs. It was then that I felt that I was being watched, but not from the dark end of he barn like usual. It felt like someone was on the stairs behind me. It felt as if someone’s eyes were searing holes into the back of my head. We tried to resume a casual conversation but my brother alerted us to the fact that he had seen something on the stairs. I turned my head to see a black figure looming on the stairs. It looked as though someone was standing there, their head just peaking up through the floor.
We all agreed we wanted out of there, the only problem was whatever was on those stairs was blocking our only exit, unless we wanted to jump out of a two-story window. We obviously had to wait this thing out as it wasn’t going anywhere. Each time I dared to look back the figure was still there, unmoving, just staring , a faceless black mass, just staring at us. Then, it began to move, we heard shuffling and thumps as it slowly began to move up the rest of the stairs. The candles we had lit began to flicker incessantly as it moved. I forced myself to not look back, but I knew what was happening because my brother and his girlfriend had terror written all over their faces as their eyes followed something through the darkness
Suddenly my brother whispered urgently under his breath, “it made it up the stairs… we have got to get out of here!” The candles which were flickering suddenly stopped, as did the shuffling footsteps. Everyone held their breath for this sudden silence. It was our window opportunity to leave I thought so stood up fast. My brother and his girlfriend took the cue and we all rushed out and down the stairs tripping over each other. It was not until we got into the house that we all decided that we would never go up there again.
Since then we have had discussions about that night. My brother revealed to me that once it made it up the stairs it had stopped directly behind the couch I was sitting in. He claims to this day that it had reached out like it was going to touch my face but that I had stood up before it could and it had vanished just then. Although its been nearly six months since the event occurred, my skin crawls every time we recount that night. I look back on that summer when we were practically chased out of our barn because we had truly become the strangers in someone else’s space.
