Haunted New Mexico

This story is about an experience I had during a road trip that I and my boyfriend, Max, at the time took this past summer. Some background about us, we were both 20 years old at the time, and Max has always been a skeptic when it comes to anything concerning the paranormal.

That being said, we took this road trip to New Mexico for the annual UFO convention (I’m a dork, I know.) Us being broke college kids, we stayed with my great aunt and uncle during our stay as we couldn’t afford a hotel. My aunt and uncle live in a typical New Mexico style house, which is only one story but with a large layout. My uncle is a doctor and travels quite frequently. Because of that, their house is full of different trinkets, from handmade dolls, woven bowls, and art from Peru or Brazil to tapestries and masks from Africa. Yeah, you know where this is going.

Both my aunt and uncle are very religious Christians, and because of this, they prepared two different rooms for my boyfriend and I to sleep in, as it wouldn’t be appropriate for us to sleep in the same room. They have 3 children, all of whom are older and have moved out by now. I stayed in the oldest daughter’s bedroom, while my boyfriend stayed in the younger daughter’s room, which had been turned into an office but still had a pull out couch in it.

My relatives also had another member of their family, Maple. Maple is their son’s Bernese Mountain dog who also tends to travel and leaves Maple to stay with them when he does. Although she is monstrous, like, I’m talking the size of a small bear monstrous,  Maple is the sweetest dog I have ever met, and was definitely loving the extra attention that she was getting during our stay. She would follow us around the house wherever we went and even would come into my bedroom and sleep on the floor next to me at night.

So anyway, the story. We stayed about 4 nights there, and I will admit that at night the long hallways in the house do get kind of creepy, but that’s about it. Other than that, totally normal house. The only thing I can think of that was strange was that Maple would refuse to go into my boyfriend’s room with him, even though she would follow him everywhere else around the house. Max and I would watch tv in his room before going to bed and retiring in our separate rooms, and Maple would just stand or sit outside the room peering in. I just figured she wasn’t allowed in the office or something, or that the small cramped room wasn’t comfortable for her, being such a big dog. Other than that being odd, everything was fine until the 3rd night. I was awoken in the middle of the night by my full grown, 20 year old boyfriend practically hyperventilating as he shook me awake. I have never seen him freak out like this. When I finally got him to calm down and explain what happened, he said that he had been up, playing on his phone when he thought he heard a very faint series of whispers. As he froze, and tried to listen and pinpoint where these noises were coming from, a whisper, louder than the others, clearly said “Maxxxxx….” Unlike the other whispers, it sounded like someone was right next to him, whispering right in his ear.

To be honest, I didn’t really believe him. Although this was out of character for him, we are avid watchers of scary story videos and I thought that maybe he was paranoid or making it up as a ploy to sleep in the same room as me. I finally got him to calm down and go back to bed.

The next night, he was nervous about sleeping in the same room again. Like the night before, I was awoken in the middle of the night to a panicked boyfriend. This time, along with the faint whispers, he woke up to a weird pressure on one side of his body, like something was pressed up against him. When he got up, turned on the lights, and looked at the bed, he said there was an indent. Like something was sitting on it. That was enough for him to decide to sleep on the living room couch for the remainder of our last night there.

The next day, relieved that our stay was coming to an end, we were able to laugh off the events of the night before. Somehow the last night’s events seemed trivial in the day time. As we were packing up our things, I heard a crash come from my boyfriends room. When I went to see what happened, he was frozen, a look of horror on his face, looking across the room at a shelf on the opposite wall. Amidst the various decorations on the shelf, a handmade doll from South America had somehow fallen off. This was extremely weird seeing as no one was around it to cause this and the shelf was on a sturdy wall, one that couldn’t be bumped to cause the doll to fall. As I was putting the doll back in it’s place on the shelf, I examined it. It was a pretty creepy looking doll already, but I noticed something startling. The doll’s hair was made from real human hair.

I don’t know what the entity that my boyfriend heard was or why that specific doll fell off the shelf, but after that I am going to be wary of bringing home any “souvenirs” from other countries.
